Why Are Tokenomics Important?

Economics are predictive, meaning that given a rule we try and determine what outcomes to expect. Whereas tokenomics are design-oriented, meaning that given a desired outcome, we try to define the rules to achieve the outcome.

Why is this important? Well if you’re going to design a rule to incentivise a certain outcome from a user, you need to have an understanding for:

• The problem and what you’re proposed solution is going to be

• How this solution creates value and for whom

• How the solution will grow based on who is interacting with it and the projected value capture

• The role of the actual token within the protocol

• The myriad of users, the tasks that they will perform, and their underlying motivations for doing so

• …

All in all, you need to understand how the users are woven into every aspect of interaction in the protocol. Tokenomics are the understanding of this interaction and the designing of the next steps (not simply how many tokens each user gets and over how long – aka pie charts and allocation schedules). 

Obviously, this is important for those designing these protocols but also for users and/or investors that are interacting with them. How the system is designed affects how it is used and the expected ROI. Any diligent builder, user, or investor cannot ignore this.
